Appliances talk, just not in words. Most of the time, they start warning you with sound before anything fully breaks. The trick is knowing which noises are harmless and which ones are a countdown timer.
Clicking can be normal in some units, but repeated clicking, especially in a refrigerator, can point to a relay or compressor start issue. A humming fridge that is not cooling can point to a fan problem or a compressor trying and failing. In washers and dryers, clicking can mean a worn latch, a timer problem, or a control relay chattering.
Grinding is almost always friction, and friction usually means damage. In a washer it could be bearings, a drive system issue, or something trapped where it should not be. In a dryer it might be rollers, idler, or a drum seal problem. Let that go too long and you can chew up parts that were fine before.
Squealing is another classic. Belts, pulleys, and worn supports love to squeal. It can start as an occasional noise and turn into something constant, and by then the part is usually ready to fail.
If you hear a new sound and your gut says βthat ainβt right,β trust it. A quick check now can prevent a bigger repair later, and it keeps your appliance from taking out more parts while you wait.
