Appliances last longer when they are properly maintained. That does not mean you need to be a technician. It means you handle the simple stuff that keeps machines from working harder than they should.
Filters and airflow are a perfect example. Dryer vents, refrigerator coils, dishwasher filters, and washer drain traps all collect gunk. When those areas get clogged, the appliance still runs, but it runs strained. Strain leads to heat, wear, and early failures.
Seals and hoses are another quiet killer. A worn refrigerator gasket leaks cold air and forces longer run times. Washer hoses can weaken and burst. Dishwasher door seals can leak and cause damage fast. These are small items that can prevent big messes.
Maintenance also helps you catch issues early. A weird sound, a slow drain, a slight temperature drift, those things are easier to fix when they are small. Waiting usually makes it worse, and it almost always makes it more expensive.
If you want appliances to last, treat them like equipment, not magic boxes. A little upkeep buys you more years, fewer breakdowns, and fewer days where your house feels like it is falling apart.
